The Simple Dollar - Component Library

Since 2006, The Simple Dollar (TSD) has helped millions save money, buy a home or car, get out of debt, retire confidently, and achieve financial freedom. TSD staffed over thirty full-time writers and content publishers specializing in economic decision-making.

My Role – From 2019 to 2021, I was the Creative Director (and primary designer) for TSD. During my time with the brand, I spearheaded the development of a Component Library from the ground up – while designing numerous prototypes for extensive product testing and iteration. I integrated guidelines and standards throughout the design process, such as accessibility requirements, user interface best practices, and interaction patterns. In the accompanying showcase, you will find a curated selection of my design assets and page layouts.

Shortly after Red Ventures acquired TSD in 2019 - my team was asked to perform a heuristic evaluation on TSD’s top-visited pages - plus provide a battery of competitive and comparative analysis reports on significant product features and functions. Our findings surfaced significant inconsistencies throughout the UI and functionality - including misused brand assets, colors, iconography, and photography. Much of which was detrimental to the legitimacy and trustworthiness of the website.

In the past, content publishers have used poor-quality icons in different styles, which negatively impacted their brand image and credibility. To address this issue, I developed a comprehensive library of over 150 scalable icons specifically designed for insurance, loans, and credit card businesses. The use of branded icons not only ensures brand consistency and a unique visual identity but also aids in effectively communicating complex concepts to improve user experience and engagement. Additionally, I provided editors and publishers with a styleguide that outlines how to use icons and brand assets consistently.
